MARE Teacher Professional Workshops

Interested in bringing more science into your K-8 classroom?

Wonder how to meet the California State Science Standards in a fun and exciting way that will engage students' interest?

Attend Ocean Discovery!'s workshop series designed to give you everything you need to incorporate an award-winning, inquiry-based science curriculum into your school or classroom!

Ocean Discovery! is pleased to introduce MARE teacher professional development workshops starting in September 2006. These workshops are designed to train elementary and middle school teachers in a stimulating, hands-on program that teaches the Standards using marine habitats to excite children's natural learning skills. Students learn chemistry, biology, ecology, geology and physics, as well as mathematics and language arts, using examples taken from the rocky intertidal, sandy beach, kelp forest, and open ocean environments.

Don't know much about marine habitats? Don't worry, Ocean Discovery! staff will walk you through the activities and background knowledge every step of the way.

This workshop series provides all the resources teachers will need to bring the MARE program to their classrooms. The MARE program is not a rote memorization of facts, but a discovery of knowledge as students work together with the teacher in scientific activities. At the workshops, teachers will learn about the philosophy of MARE, its adherence to the California State Science Standards, its inquiry-based activities, and its inclusion of English-learners. Several MARE activities will be modeled to teachers in grade-specific groups. Emphasis will be on how each activity addresses the Standards while encouraging students to think, question, and investigate as scientists. During the workshops, there will be several field trips designed to help teachers become more familiar with marine habitats.
