MARE Teacher Professional Workshop Details

Workshop Dates:

3 Saturdays, 9am-4pm (Sep 30th , Oct 14th , Nov 4th). Optional 4th Saturday (Nov 18th)

SSU Credit (pending): 1 Academic Unit, 2 Academic Units for attending 4th Saturday

21 CEU hours, 30 CEU hours for attending 4th Saturday

Workshop Cost: $180 per teacher (which includes $80 worth of education materials); $20 extra for optional 4th meeting.

Workshop Series Objectives:

  1. To train teachers in inquiry-based science education that aligns to California State Science Standards.
  2. To train teachers how to implement the MARE curriculum in their class and/or school and to increase their confidence in incorporating adult-level science content related to a specific marine habitat into their classroom teaching.
  3. To train teachers on current science research, pedagogy, and use of MARE materials.
  4. To assist teachers in conducting an Ocean Week experience at their school.

First Saturday, September 30th, 2006. Location: Bodega Marine Laboratory

•  Philosophy of the MARE ( Marine Activities Resources & Education) Program

•  SDAIE and English Learners

•  Thematic Instructional Sequences

•  Standards Correlation & Key Concepts

•  The Learning Cycle

•  Pre-Activity Learning Strategies

•  Field Trip to Sandy Beach and Rocky Intertidal Habitats

 

Second Saturday, October 14th, 2006. Location: Bodega Marine Laboratory

•  Teacher Workgroups by Grade-Level

•  Modeling Three MARE Activities per Grade Level (with Pre-Activity, Activity & Post-Activity components)

•  Specific Key Concepts and Standards Correlations

•  Materials List & MARE Resource Kits

 

Third Saturday, November 4th, 2006. Location: Bodega Marine Laboratory

•  Conclusions and Comments

•  Ocean Week Planning

•  Grade-Specific Brainstorming Sessions between Teachers of Different Schools

•  Comment & Review Sheets

•  Field Trip to Wetlands & Mudflat Habitats

 

Fourth Saturday, November 18th , 2006; 8 am – 5 pm (Optional). Location: Bodega Marine Laboratory

•  Ocean Literacy-The Essential Principles of Ocean Sciences

•  Ocean Literacy Activities

•  How to Turn Your Classroom Into a Laboratory

•  How to Train Your Students to be Scientists
