Michelle Chow, President
Michelle is the founder of Ocean Discovery! and has been involved with marine education and research at the Bodega Marine Laboratory (University of California, Davis) for more than 12 years. She is the former Education Manager at the Aquarium of the Bay (San Francisco) and has taught university courses in marine ecology and ocean sciences at San Francisco State, Sonoma State, San Diego State, and the University of California, Davis. As a researcher, Michelle studied the impacts of marine introduced species on communities of native organisms. She received her Master’s of Science degree in ecology at San Francisco State University.
Tom Niesen, Vice President
As a Professor of Biology at San Francisco State University, Tom has been a researcher and educator in marine ecology and invertebrate biology for more than 30 years. Honored as a Fellow of the California Academy of Sciences, his publications include such popular titles as The Beachcomber’s Guide to California Marine Life and The Marine Biology Coloring Book, in addition to his numerous articles in scientific journals. Tom received his Master’s degree from San Diego State University and his Ph.D. from the University of Oregon.
Vic Chow, Secretary
Vic has been a marine educator and ecologist in Sonoma County for more than 25 years. He has taught university field courses at the Bodega Marine Laboratory and Sonoma State, and has developed inquiry-based mentorship programs for elementary and secondary school students and teachers. Vic has conducted research in a number of marine and coastal habitats and has implemented state-of-the-art ocean monitoring programs and technologies. He received his Ph.D. in ecology from the University of California, Davis, and his Master’s degree in marine biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
Rodney Williams, Treasurer
Rodney is a Certified Public Accountant working for a southern California software company that develops business and accounting applications. He is the former accountant for the Aquarium of the Bay in San Francisco. Rodney graduated with a degree in accounting from the University of North Dakota.
Brad Paschal
Brad is presently an Assistant Professor of Biology at Solano Community College in Fairfield where he teaches courses in ecology and marine biology. As a researcher and educator at San Francisco State, he conducted research on rockfish growth while working to revise course curricula under the National Science Foundation-sponsored Mathematics and Science Teacher Education program. Brad has also served as a marine educator at the Ocean Institute in southern California and as the reserve steward at the Bodega Marine Laboratory.
