Ocean Discovery! provides opportunities for teachers to learn more about San Francisco Bay and the Northern California coastline. We hope that you’ll take advantage of these professional development programs aimed at increasing your knowledge and confidence about our curriculum and activities. And, as always, Ocean Discovery! will provide on-site coaching if desired.
MARE Summer Institute This is a seven-day residential program lead by Lawrence Hall of Science (UCB) and held at UC Santa Cruz. Here you will learn all about the MARE curriculum and how it can be a successful and meaningful addition to your school. This training is designed for new schools starting MARE for the first time. Usually two teachers per school attend and then return to disseminate the information to their colleagues. For more information contact Ocean Discovery! at mare discovertheocean.org.
In-Service and Consulting Days
In-service is a full 6-hour day of training for all teachers and interested staff who use the MARE curriculum. Topics include updates to the curriculum, new resources, and new activities. Consulting days are held at your school and are used to plan and schedule topics, activities, and events for Ocean Week. Ocean Discovery! helps determine major deadlines and contacts major sponsors so that Ocean Week arrives without a hitch. For more information contact Ocean Discovery! at mare discovertheocean.org.
Science Content Workshops
These workshops are offered throughout the year so that teachers may increase their familiarity with current marine research, conservation activities, local marine habitats and marine creatures, and problems that threaten their existence.
