MARE
MARE (Marine Activities, Resources, and Education)
is an exciting marine science curriculum for elementary and middle schools. It was developed in 1986 by the Lawrence Hall of Science (University of California, Berkeley) and is designed to teach California State Science Standards using the study of unique marine habitats to enhance children’s natural learning skills. Each grade studies a different habitat: rocky intertidal, sandy beach, kelp forest, open ocean. Students learn concepts of ecology, biology, geology, physics, and chemistry using examples from the ocean.
The MARE program culminates in Ocean Week, where the entire school is transformed into a working laboratory. Both students and the general public join together in an exhilarating exploration of the ocean. Ocean Week often becomes one of the most highly anticipated events of the year.

Student Symposium (First annual conference was 16 March 2007 at the Bodega Marine Laboratory)
Student Symposia are designed for students in grades 5-12. Students of similar grade levels from different schools conduct research on how humans affect our coastline and present their findings at a public symposium designed to mimic a real scientific conference. Younger students will do their research through books, newspaper articles, and internet searches. Students work in pairs to present their findings in a 10-15 minute seminar or by putting together a poster for display. Older students will include an analysis of current research data in their presentation. Symposia will often take place on a Saturday so that parents and the public may participate in the event. The symposium is held during the morning followed by a luncheon (where students can continue interacting with one another) and an afternoon poster session.
