Student research on Bodega mudflats
If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in water.
Loren Eiseley
Ocean Discovery! has programs uniquely designed to meet the needs of every age group. All elementary, middle and high school curricula meet the California State Science Standards.

K-12
Students enjoy learning as they participate in hands-on activities designed to teach marine biology and general science. Ocean Discovery!'s student programs reflect our philosophy that learning can and should be fun!
MARE (Marine Activities, Resources, and Education)
Ocean Discovery! is bringing the award winning marine curriculum, MARE, to Sonoma County’s elementary and middle schools. MARE (pronounced as the Latin word for ocean: mär) is a whole school immersion program where students learn science using marine habitats as laboratories for hands-on learning. The MARE program wraps up with Ocean Week.
Student Symposium
Schools come together in a real scientific conference where students present issues that affect and threaten Sonoma County’s beautiful coastline. Intended for grades 5 and higher, this half day activity lets students experience how marine scientists gather and share the results of their studies.

Undergraduate
Thinking about a career in marine science as a researcher, a teacher, or a public outreach educator? Ocean Discovery! understands how difficult that decision can be. However, here are several programs that can help.
Communicating Ocean Science
Starting in the spring of 2006, Sonoma State University, in partnership with Ocean Discovery!, will offer Communicating Ocean Science. Learn how teachers or naturalists explain scientific issues to kids in K-6th grade.
Marine and Coastal Field Ecology
Bodega Marine Laboratory offers a six-week summer class where college students become scientists studying marine ecology. Students create their own research projects, collect the data, and present their results in a scientific conference. Explore the ecological interactions that take place in the ocean.

Educators
Interested in learning more about ocean studies and how it can be incorporated into your science lessons? Ocean Discovery! offers in-depth professional development through first-hand involvement of teachers in both marine research and field experiences. Through curriculum training, kits and supplies, and on-site coaching, Ocean Discovery! will raise your comfort level for teaching inquiry-oriented science.

General Public
Want to explore some of the most unique marine habitats in California? Ever wonder what was that weird critter you saw in the tidepools? Ocean Discovery! provides field trips, lectures, and special events for the public to enjoy. Learn what researchers are doing to preserve what some call the “last wilderness on earth.” Our conservation programs show how your help is essential to maintaining the health of our beautiful coastal environments.
