Ocean Discovery! is partnering with the University of California Bodega Marine Laboratory and local schools to provide authentic science experiences for high school and middle school students. Funded by the National Science Foundation's GK-12 Program, CAMEOS is based on our Student Symposium curriculum. Graduate students from UC Davis mentor student research on topics related to ocean and environmental sciences, and students present the results of their investigations at an annual Research Symposium at the Bodega Marine Laboratory. Participating schools for the academic year 2009-2010 are:
Analy High School |
Petaluma High School |
Casa Grande High School |
Rancho Cotate High School |
El Molino High School |
Santa Rosa High School |
Maria Carrillo High School |
Tomales High School |
Willowside Middle School

Our symposia are designed to have students experience the entire scientific process from the collection and analysis of data to the collaborative presentation of their research to their peers. Students investigate how humans are impacting aquatic environments and present their findings at a real scientific conference. Our naturalists will teach students about scientific questions, experimental design, analysis and presentation of data using graphing programs and Power Point. Students work in teams to present their findings in a 10-15 minute seminar to other students their age from other schools. Each symposium is open to the public as we welcome parents to participate in the event. Student symposia are held during the morning followed by a luncheon (where students can continue interacting with one another) and an afternoon beach clean-up.
In order to participate in this event, teachers must be willing to allow our naturalists to visit their school at least four times during the course of a school semester, to provide students with additional time for independent study, and to arrange to attend the symposium event.
Teachers, please contact Vic Chow if you are interested in participating in this program.
