Communicating Ocean Science
Starting in the spring of 2006, Sonoma State University will offer Communicating Ocean Science. This class will train students how to communicate their scientific knowledge by teaching ocean science to elementary and middle school students. Students will spend the first part of the semester learning keys to successful teaching. Later, Ocean Discovery! will place teams of college students into K-5th grade classrooms. Experience what it is like to decipher complex science concepts for kids while being a role model for students.
If you are an elementary school teacher and would like some help leading marine science activities, sign up on our Volunteer page to get yourself a pair of college students.
Marine and Coastal Field Ecology
During the summer, Bodega Marine Laboratory offers a six-week, on-site marine ecology course ESP 124. Marine and Coastal Field Ecology. Initially, participants will learn about local, diverse and complex marine habitats: rocky intertidal, mudflats, nearshore ocean, coastal prairie. Then they make the transformation from student to scientist as they pick their own question, create their own experimental design, collect and interpret data, and present their results to the Bodega Marine Laboratory community.
Will your study result in publication in a major scientific journal? If you like exploring ideas no one has pursued before, this is your class. So grab your lab coat (or more likely your hip waders) and sign up at www.bml.ucdavis.edu/student-info/courses.html.
